Located on Calle Real de León, this church presents a mixture of several styles: an eclectic exterior and a colonial-baroque style interior. The Church of San Francisco is one of the oldest temples in the city of Leon, built in 1639, along with the convent of the same name. In the church are preserved two of the best altars of Nicaragua of the purest Spanish plateresque. In this church originated the celebration of La Purisima, during the night of December 7. Here the Gritería, the greatest religious manifestation of Nicaragua, takes place. It also houses the image of San Benito de Palermo, a prodigious and much loved image, in whose honor mass has been celebrated since 1924, the object of massive devotion every Holy Monday, when the image is carried in procession through the streets of León. 💡Curiosities The Convent of San Francisco is the first and oldest convent with its church in the city of Leon. Today the Hotel El Convento is one of the best boutique hotels in Nicaragua, which dazzles with its decoration and beautiful colonial garden.
