Ruins of León Viejo, León

The city of León was founded on June 15, 1524 by the Spanish conquistador, Francisco Hernández de Córdoba. It was the first city founded by Spaniards in Nicaragua and consequently one of the most important cities in the region. These ruins were originally discovered in 1931, and re-discovered in 1967 by researchers from the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua. As a result of the excavations, it is known that the city had a layout similar to almost all the cities of Latin America at that time, in the form of a grid, an exact square with the square located in its center. 💡Curiosities León Viejo was abandoned in 1610, after a major earthquake, caused by erupting volcanoes surrounding it. It was decided that a new city of León would be built 50 km to the northwest and León Viejo was abandoned under the falling ash and volcanic rocks of the Momotombo volcano. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
