The volcano has a height of 859 meters. Its slopes are covered by trees and fall down to the Gulf of Fonseca. Climbing up to the crater is not difficult, the slopes are not very steep and provide beautiful panoramic views. From the volcano you can see El Salvador and Honduras across the Gulf. The crater has a diameter of approximately two kilometers and the lagoon is located at depth, at a distance of 500 meters. It is not allowed to go down to the lagoon, as the road was destroyed by the 2001 earthquake. This climb takes eight hours if you start from the foot of the volcano, or three hours if you drive up to the first half. 💡Curiosities The most violent eruption in the recent history of Nicaragua was on January 22, 1835, starring the Cosigüina volcano. A large part of the crater exploded and pieces were blown off, forming islets in the Gulf of Fonseca. The ashes reached a distance of up to 1400 kilometers, reaching Mexico City.
